What Can Blue do for YOU?

You’re pounding the pavement, going about your daily routine. Chances are you’ve never noticed those blue reflectors in the middle of the street. But they could save your life.

Who Knew?

Blue reflective markers on roads help firefighters locate hydrants in an emergency. Sometimes referred to as “Botts’ Dots” or “blue dots,” these reflectors are extremely helpful when the fire department is trying to find the nearest hydrant at night, in bad weather, or when the hydrant is otherwise difficult to find due to obstruction. The reflectors are placed to the right or left of the street’s centerline, depending on which side the hydrant is.

Unfortunately, many of the roads throughout Hermosa Beach are void of blue dots. Street repaving, general wear and tear, and lack of city time and resources have halted installation and maintenance of the blue dots.

Since reflectors are proven to quicken response fire department response time, the Hermosa Beach Fire Department and the Public Works Department have joined forces with Leadership Hermosa’s Class of 2010 to ensure every hydrant in the city is marked by a blue dot. Our goal? To do what we can as residents to help save structures, and lives, and at the same time heighten awareness of community safety.

The Need

There are 359 fire hydrants in Hermosa Beach. Roughly 85 percent of those hydrants are either not marked by a dot, or the dot is damaged and needs to be replaced. This spring, Hermosa Beach Public Works will work to install blue dots at all hydrants where there’s need. Look for the “blue crew” on your street and say thanks if they install or replace a dot near your hydrant. It could save a life!

Adopt-A-Dot

Leadership Hermosa Beach Class of 2010 surveyed the blue dot need, collaborated with the City and spearheaded the funding of our project with the help of community members and local businesses.

Thank you!
